The Architecture of a Reputation: A Media Retrospective

The Architecture of a Reputation: A Media Retrospective

When I look back at the various media features over the last decade, I realize that every project, every interview, and every article wasn't just "PR"—they were the structural milestones of a career. In 2016, I told Beeld newspaper: "If someone is willing to spend R20 million on an architect-designed home, they don't just go to the first architect they find on a computer search." They look for a name built on trust.

Today, I'm sharing a few of those milestones. This isn't just a portfolio; it's a look at the journey from stacking bricks to designing a life.

1. The Foundation: Reputation and Patience (Beeld, 2016)

In this business feature, we discussed the long road to mastery. Young architects are often in a rush, but as I noted back then, "The true great spirits in the architectural world often have an average age of around 75". This gives us time to refine our craft. The article focused on the importance of sustainability, the dangers of under-pricing your worth, and the reality that passion—not just glamour—must be the driving force behind every project.

2. The Visual Proof: Top Billing Features

There is little as satisfying as seeing a 2D design come to vibrant life on screen. We were privileged to be featured on Top Billing, showcasing homes designed specifically for the South African climate and lifestyle. These features highlight how architecture interacts with light, space, and the environment.

3. Family First: SA Home Owner

I am often asked about my design philosophy. My answer remains consistent: I believe an architect must have a very close relationship with the client, especially regarding residential homes. After all, this is the space where they will live and build memories for years. In our feature for SA Home Owner, we focused on the theme "Built for the Family." A house is not a museum; it is a stage for family life.

The Architect's Note:

Whether it is a glossy TV insert or a serious business article, the golden thread running through it all is intention. As I said in Beeld, "The glamour every now and then isn't bad, but it is the passion behind it that remains the driving force".
